We are a very active school here in Bishop O’ Brien N.S and encourage all the children to get active and to participate in exercise on a daily basis. Between P.E, playing in the yard at lunch time and a number of activities we participate in during the year, the children are always on the go.
As a school, we have enjoyed much success in inter-school hurling and football Sciath na Scol competitions in the last number of years. We also enter a team into the annual St. Colman’s College blitz and another team into Loreto Secondary School’s Ladies football blitz.
Every year a bus load of children heads off to participate in Cork City Sports which is always a fantastic day out. Whether they win some silverware or not, there is always a smile on their faces coming home.
The children from 2nd to 6th class take part in the Aquatics module in P.E. This takes place in Fermoy Leisure Centre for 6 weeks.
We have a chess club in the school which meet once a week during lunch. It always attracts a crowd and it is very popular. They start off by learning the rules of the game and then they will take on different opponents each week.
The children in 5th and 6th Class love to play handball. In 2021 when an extension was added to the school it was decided to add a handball alley to the gable end of the new classroom. This is used daily and every year a handball tournament takes place within their classroom.
We hold a sports day every June in the school where the children are all divided into groups and take part in different activities at various stations set up and run by the members of staff.
Also, at the end of every school year as the 6th Class prepare to move on to Secondary school there is one tradition that is loved by both the pupils and the staff. This is the Staff vs Pupil sports competition. Each staff member is put to the test by playing 6th class pupils in a number of different sports. We play Basketball, handball, badminton, table-tennis and welly-throwing. This is always the best of fun and in no way does it get competitive!
