Homework

  • Homework is a very important part of school work. It helps to consolidate work that has been done in class and fosters an ethic of work both within and outside school.
  • Homework is not limited to just WRITTEN work. Reading, spelling tables, poetry and other learning work are equally important.
  • Homework is set from Monday to Thursday nights only. The homework journal/homework pack should be checked every night by parents. We encourage parents to emphasise the learning aspects and neatness of the work. Parents should sign the journal every nightto indicate that they have checked their child’s homework.
  • Parents and pupils should choose a suitable time and location for doing homework where there is silence and minimal distractions. Some pupils like to do it immediately after school while others like to have a short break first and then do it. It is not recommended for pupils to do homework while listening to music or while the television is on.
  • Pupils should not have to spend an inordinate amount of time at their homework and if they do, a problem exists and the matter should be discussed with the teacher. Here follows the recommended amount of time that should be spent on homework in each class:

Junior & Senior Infants-         20 mins max

First & Second Class-             30 mins max

Third & Fourth Class-             40 mins max

Fifth & Sixth Class-                60 mins max

Parent-Teacher Communication

The school welcomes parents, but the day’s work must not be interrupted unnecessarily. Good and regular communication is necessary for the development of a good learning environment. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate in contacting the school. Please telephone to arrange to meet a teacher at a mutually suitable time. The school’s phone number is 025 36121. Emails are:

Office– Imelda bobrienns@gmail.com

Principal– Joanne O’ Brien Kennelly principal@bartlemyns.ie

Also, on our school App Aladdin, you can send messages to the office and class teachers. We would appreciate if you could send a message on Aladdin to notify the school when your child will be collected early/ dropped late due to appointments etc. You will also be requested to add an absence reason if your child has been out.

Every year, all parents are invited to the school to discuss their child’s progress, attitudes and behaviour. These meetings usually take place in November. If you have any worries about your child’s progress, please make an appointment to discuss it with the class teacher. Reports are sent to parents following the summer tests.

School Hours

Monday to Friday inclusive:

The school is open to receive pupils at 9:10am.

Classes begin at 9:20am.

Break time is from 11:00-11:10am. Lunch time is from 1.00pm to 1:30pm.

Classes end at 3:00pm for 1st to 6th classes and end at 2:00pm for Juniors and Senior Infants.

The school does not accept responsibility for pupils who are on the school grounds before 9.10 a.m and after 3.05 p.m.

Unnecessary stress can be avoided if children arrive on time for school and are collected punctually at the end of the day. An after-school care facility is provided for the Juniors and Senior Infant children from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. This facility was set up by parents and is entirely separate to the school. Parents who wish to avail of this service enter into a private arrangement with Kathleen O’ Donovan.

School Uniform

Please ensure that your child always wears the school uniform. It is important in helping to foster a pride in the school and making the child feel part of it. Please clearly label all articles of clothing and footwear. Please notify us if items are lost.

Our uniform consists of:

Girls: Grey skirt/ pinafore or trousers, wine jumper or cardigan, grey shirt, wine tie (optional)

Boys: Grey trousers, wine jumper, grey shirt, wine tie (optional)

Shoes with laces should not be worn to school unless your child is able to tie their laces.

School tracksuit

For Physical Education, people should wear the school tracksuit with a grey polo shirt. Our tracksuit supplier is Bodibro and the tracksuit will be available to buy online on bodibro.ie. We also have the option of school shorts. These are wine in colour and can be worn with the polo shirt in warmer weather. The shorts are optional. The grey polo shirt is available in any department store.  You will be notified in September regarding what days your child is to wear the tracksuit.

We also have a school jacket and bodywarmer that is navy in colour with the school crest. This is entirely optional also.

Healthy Eating

A well balanced diet is essential for school going children. In our school we promote healthy eating and exercise and try to instill healthy habits for life We strongly encourage parents to give their children a lunch that is rich in carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. Good sources of carbohydrate include bread or pasta. Try to include a source of protein which could include meat such as chicken, ham or turkey, or fish such as tuna. Cheese and yogurts are good protein sources. Please avoid yogurts with a lot of added sugars. Try to include a fruit or vegetable source such as an apple, orange or carrot sticks. Water is ideal for a drink. It is better to avoid juices which can be very high in added sugar.

A small plain homemade bun is permitted however biscuits, chocolate, crisps or fizzy drinks are not permitted. Remember to give your child lunch items that he/she can easily manage to eat and open.

A small treat on a Friday is permitted. This could be a fun size treat bar, a small iced bun or a small bag of popcorn.
