At Bishop O’Brien National school, we have a great interest, enthusiasm, and passion for

S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). We believe that engagement with the

S.T.E.M. subjects allows for ample opportunities to promote the children’s creativity, critical

thinking & problem-solving skills. It helps to develop a curiosity that is vital for successful

learning. It provides a means by which the children can work collaboratively and develop their

communication and teamwork skills.

Since 2017, we have been involved in the Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme

with the aim of increasing interest in S.T.E.M. among students. As well as

recognition, this award brings a range of benefits; it provides a structure for STEM work, it

raises the profile of science in our school and increases whole school collaboration.

We complete the initiative on alternate years and have received the Plaque of STEM Excellence

each time.

S.T.E.M. Station Initiative 2022/2023

Inspired by the work of Designer Minds Ltd, this year we are running a school wide initiative to

further develop the great work we have completed in S.T.E.M. to date.

This initiative involves each class undertaking an 8-week block of S.T.E.M. activities.

The 5th & 6th class pupils are up first and here are just some of the activities they have been

working on…

They have explored the strand of Energy & Forces as they constructed marble runs using

Gravitrax.

They have worked to develop an understanding of the effects of earthquakes and they set to

work as engineers to design a Lego skyscraper that was to withstand the force of an earthquake

They have been exploring computer coding through the use of the Lightbot app and also

through the use of Sphero Coding Robots.

They have worked on building their teamwork and creativity skills through lego team build

projects.

And we have seen that we may have a number of young movie directors on our hands as the

children created their own movies using the Stop Motion Studio App.

The stations are creating a great sense of excitement and interest in S.T.E.M in the school and the

children are greatly enjoying them. We look forward to moving to complete similar activities with

the children of 3rd and 4th class in the coming weeks and then right down to the Infant classroom

by the end of the school year.

Keep an eye on this page over the coming months where we will keep you up to date with all

things S.T.E.M. happening in our school.
