Green Schools Flag for Water

Our Green School Committee are back up and running this year. After successfully

obtaining flags for ‘Litter and Waste’ and ‘Energy’ in previous years they are set to move

on to the next theme which will be ‘Water’.

A warm welcome to Emma O’ Regan (1st class), Killian Murphy (2nd class) and John

Keating (3rd class) class who have joined Jessica McDonnell (6th class), Amber Leahy

(5th class) and Kate O’Donovan (4th class) on the committee. We would like to thank

the committee for their commitment to the programme and look forward to working with

them in the coming years.

While we are working on the ‘water’ theme this year, aspects of the previous flags will

also continue. Our ‘Picker Pals’ from 1st and 2nd class make up the sub- committee for

Litter and Waste. They have ensured that all classrooms have labelled bins for

recycling, general waste and compost. They are completing regular checks on these

bins to ensure correct use is being made of them. They have reminded classes of our

Green Code for Litter and Waste and are taking charge of monitoring litter on the school

grounds. The committee has registered for the National Spring Clean and we will

complete a whole school clean-up day in March (date to be decided).

Our ‘Bright Sparks’ from 3rd and 4th class form the sub-committee for Energy. They

have reminded all classes of the school’s Green Code for Energy, and how

we can save energy in our school and will be carrying out regular checks of energy

saving throughout the school.

Our 5th and 6th class pupils will lead the committee in our current theme ‘Water’ which

will be completed over a two year period. So far, they have been working to calculate

the current water usage in the school through their readings of the school’s water metre,

they have identified all water points in the school and carried out a leak tests in all

classrooms.

They have devised a survey for both school and home to get a general idea of water

usage among the school community and have worked with the Green Schools Co-

ordinating teachers in devising a lesson on water conservation for all classes.

We look forward to working with the whole school community in the coming months to

achieve the objectives of this programme.
